Clean Air Day charity launches new campaign for post-coronavirus lockdown

The charity behind the annual Clean Air Day events has launched a campaign to see the UK’s good air quality continue when the coronavirus lockdown ends.

The campaign is called #BuildBackCleanerAir, and Global Action Plan (GAP) wants to encourage government and businesses to do everything they can to avoid a sudden surge in air pollution as normal life resumes.

To begin with, the charity is asking residents of Lambeth and Southwark in London to share feedback on four topics in the form of photos, videos and messages.

For the first topic, they are asking for experiences with reduced road traffic since the lockdown began

They ask: ‘You may have noticed fewer cars on the road or in fact more cars? Have you found the pavements lack space for people to walk or exercise at the advised distance? Are you noticing new smells from less car fumes or new wildlife in the garden for the first time?  We want you to share your unique experiences, specifically answering: How has reduced traffic affected your daily life? ’

If you live in Lambeth or Southwark, email your photos, videos and messages to:

In March, GAP announced that Clean Air Day has been postponed until October 8 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The annual event was due to take place on June 18, but Global Action Plan (GAP), the charity who coordinates the day says the new day will give event organisers enough time to team up with schools, workplaces and local communities once everyone is back up and running.

The new date will also be closer to Car Free Day on September 23 and will coincide with Walk to School Month in October.

614 Clean Air Day events took place across the UK on June 20, 2019, with 400,000 people taking part in events from walking buses and flagship announcements to electric vehicle roadshows and street parties.
